Emergencies can occur anywhere and at any time without warning. For instance, the National Fire Protection Association estimates that in the United States one home structure fire is reported every 93 seconds. In 2021, 1,353,500 fires resulted in 3,800 deaths and 14,700 injuries. Every member of the Notre Dame community plays an important role in emergency preparedness, whether it is developing a plan or being familiar with existing ones so that you know what to do if these types of incidents occur.

Campus Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan: The University’s Campus Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan outlines policies and procedures for managing major emergencies that may threaten the health and safety of the campus community. It applies to a broad range of major emergencies, including but not limited to fires, extended power outages, criminal activity, hazardous chemicals releases, security breaches, weather and other events impacting the life and safety of campus constituents, physical condition or credibility of the University.

Emergency Action Plans: The University has established emergency action plans specific to each building on campus. These plans provide building occupants with the expected responses to emergencies that could occur within their building.

Active Violence Preparedness: Mentally preparing for how you could respond if faced with an active threat could help you think more clearly in an emergency. The Notre Dame Police Department offers in-person Active Violence Preparedness training for members of our campus community. This training encourages, among other things, situational awareness such as looking for the exits when you enter a classroom, an arena or another public place and considering where you would go if an incident occurred. To request in-person training for your department or building, complete this Google form.

ND Alert: The University has a comprehensive emergency notification system called ND Alert. This system is used to communicate with campus in event of a major emergency. This can include email notifications, a phone call to your cell phone, and text messages. To participate in the system, be sure to submit your emergency contact information. Click here to learn more.

First Aid: The first week of June is also National CPR and AED Awareness Week. Consider getting CPR certified to better prepare for an emergency. Check out this survivor video that drives home how knowing CPR and how to use an AED can save a life.

Safe Away from Work: Safety doesn’t just apply to the workplace. Instead it should be a 24/7 mindset. Below are some helpful resources available to help keep you and your family, friends and loved ones safe.
