National Cleaning Week was March 27 through April 2, a week to recognize our frontline workers who make our work spaces clean and safe. Campus partners shared their gratitude with Building Services staff, and NDWorks Weekly readers shared photos and their thanks.

“We had a fabulous National Cleaning Week,” said Chris Hatfield, senior director for Building Services. “I was so pleased at how many departments told us the ways that they are recognizing custodians with lunches, electronic message boards, cookies, swag, gift cards and thank-you notes. This has been a great experience and the team is feeling the love from campus. We will definitely plan on having a regular event.”

Here’s what others had to say:

I want to give a shout-out to Diane Smith and Ruby Gallegos, who take care of HR's part of Grace Hall. They take such good care of us. It's always a joy to see them. Keep up the good work, Diane and Ruby!

Anna McKeever, HR communications program manager, Office of Human Resources

Thank you for keeping our Notre Dame work spaces clean and refreshed and such a pleasant place to work!! YOU ARE AWESOME!

Jude Dubash, payroll assistant, Payroll Services

University Communications greatly appreciates Ruby's positive attitude and willingness to go above and beyond for our floor. We also appreciate her warmth and smile!

Rachel Hughes-Gehring, project and accounting program coordinator, Marketing Communications

We are so grateful to Dzenita Ejup for her dedication to cleaning and maintaining our spaces in the 405 Main Building. We appreciate her cheery attitude and value her as an essential part of our suite.

Tracy Rendall, public affairs associate, Office of Public Affairs and Communications

During the pandemic when my colleagues were working remotely, I came into the office every day, and a bright spot was always in the late afternoon when Ruby would begin her day here on the fifth floor of Grace Hall.

Julie Ettl, business manager, Notre Dame Magazine

I know it's nearing the end of my workday when I hear the jingle of Ruby's keys as she surveys the tasks that need to be done on the fifth floor of Grace. She is just starting her day as we are getting ready to head home. We pass each other with a few passing words, and hers are always cheerful. She always has a smile on her face, though we did see her cry once. Last week, when we surprised her with a giant thank-you card, balloons and gifts to show her appreciation during National Cleaning Week, Ruby took a tissue from her pocket, lifted her glasses and dabbed her eyes. "I love working at Notre Dame. I will never work anywhere else."
